After completing medical training at Cambridge University and hospitals in the UK, I came to New Zealand as a junior doctor, and married a kiwi nurse. We worked in the Solomon Islands and then settled into rural general practice and raised a family in the Coromandel. To satisfy my growing interest in the human side of illness I studied and eventually made the transition from medicine to counselling and psychotherapy. I now work full time in private practice as a counsellor and psychotherapist in Ponsonby, Auckland.

I also work part time as a tutor at the Auckland medical school, and as one of four doctors in Connect Communications, providing workshops and coaching in communication skills for groups of doctors, nurses and pharmacists. For more information about Connect, see: www.connectcomm.co.nz. I also facilitate Balint groups of doctors looking at the human side of working with illness.

I am married to Wendy who is a midwife at Auckland City Hospital. We have four children who are now young adults, the youngest being 25. Active interests are summertime sailing and tramping.

Qualifications

Following training in counselling and Hakomi Integrative Psychotherapy, I gained full Membership of the New Zealand Association of Psychotherapists, and am now listed as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner. I am registered with the Psychotherapy Board of Aotearoa New Zealand.
